Tips for Exploring Anal Sex

Today is National Anal Sex Day, which means we thought we'd share some essential tips for anyone who's a bit bum-curious:

Get toy(s) that have a tapered end.

If you walk away from this with nothing else, please know that we consider this a *must* if you're planning on using toys that you'll be inserting into your anal area. The rectum is a powerful set of muscles and can create a lot of suction-- so don't be one of the many, many people annually who have to go to urgent care for sex toy removal. Get toys with a tapered end, period.

Start slow (and small) with simple play, whether it's solo or partnered.

Fingering and rimming might be a good entry to discovering what you like about rectal or anal stimulation.

Find the right lube.

Between water-based, silicone-based, and oil-based, lube is a personal choice for everyone, and there are many contextual factors to consider. This might include what sex toy(s) could be involved, if a latex condom is being used, where the anal play is happening, and what allergies someone may have. Take the time to do your research because, regardless of what you choose to use, lube is *highly* recommended for anal sex.

Address the risk of STI transmission.

Sexually transmitted infections can still happen with anal sex. If you're interacting with partner(s), especially if there is open non-monogamy involved, make sure that testing and/or protection are all a part of preparation.

Have a communication plan if you're involved in partner play.

Determine what cues you're going to use so everyone knows when things are feeling good, and when it's time to ease off. Also: think of this not as a one-time conversation but rather a tool to deploy regularly for safe, healthy sexual interactions.

Have the receiver guide the interaction(s).

Especially for folks who are new to anal play or are trying something new, a simple way to increase relaxation and safety is allowing the person experiencing the penetration have expressed, ultimate control over the interaction-- whether it's physically, verbally, or a combination of both.
